Crazy Hat Day!

Similes

We used the illustrations from the book, Serious Trouble by Arthur Howard, to help us learn about similes!  We discussed that a simile is a comparison between two things using the words "like" or "as". We used similes to describe the dragon from the story!  Next, students created an illustration of a dragon and used similes to describe their own dragon!

Point of View

We continued our close read of Stellaluna and "dug deeper" to find information, infer, and discuss the points of view of each character in the text on different topics including eating bugs, sleeping, and flying at night!

Bartlett Arboretum

We had a great time learning about seeds and how seeds travel on our field trip to the Bartlett Arboretum!

Stellaluna Book Talk

Students participated in a book discussion about Stellaluna. Students worked with a partner to spin a spinner and pick a matching task card to participate in a guided discussion about the characters, setting, problem, solution, plot and illustrations in the text!

Fire Safety!

Springdale Second Graders attended a fire safety assembly today. We learned about smoke detectors, how to safely exit in case of emergency, and to plan a meeting place in case of a fire with your family. Students were able to talk to a firefighter and climb inside a fire truck.  We read, Firefighters in Three Communities, and discussed the differences between fighting fires in urban, suburban, and rural communities. Students used information learned from reading to help them plan a creative story using the prompt "Write a story about a fire on another planet.  Tell what kind of fire truck you would need to get to the fire and how you would put out the fire!  How big is the fire and how will you stay safe?"
